In 1992, the United Nations decided that the 22nd of March would be World Water Day. Normally I don’t give a lot of attention to all those specials days, somehow every day is a special day to someone or some organisation, but this time I was interested.
Why? Because March, 22 is my birthday and more importantly because I like Water! 🙂
I’m dependent on Water and so is everybody else on this planet. But as a kayaker the relationship with Water is more special, without it you can’t paddle. Water and especially moving Water, either salt sea Water or fresh flowing Water through hills and mountains not only makes our sport possible, but also provides for food and drink to many.
As getting sick from the Erft proves, most Water especially in third world countries is not as healthy or risk free as it should be. Having read a story last week about black, blue and red rivers in China where our clothes are made and colored, your buying actions can have impact on the Water in the World. Thinking about this problem for only one day a year won’t solve those problems though.
I looked through the UN Waters site to see what you can do on this day, but I am clueless. It seems there are events scattered around the globe, but it’s not clear to me what I myself can do. I would guess a list to get started would be a simple improvement, like not showering for more than 5 minutes, don’t put chemical waste (like paint) through the sink etc… Maybe I’m not looking in the right places or maybe World Water Day is about something else. If you know, let’s hear it in the comments.
What do you do on this day to celebrate Wold Water Day?
