Last week I joined a static freediving introduction, given by Nanja van den Broek from Enker. Nanja holds some Dutch records in different freediving disciplines and likes to teach others in this strange and small sport.
The goal is to stay under water for as long as you can, without any air support like normal divers use. Static freediving is just laying face down in the pool as relaxed as possible for as long as possible. The dynamic parts focus on either swimming as deep as possible (with or without weigths and/or lines) or swimming as far as possible with mono or dual vins. So far for the background on this sport

Some photos of me trying to do some moves after a day of being the instructor in Hohen Limburg. More to follow

Wow I have been busy kayaking and other stuff since my last post in June. The dutch weather was not that great for sun and summer lovers, but was great for surfkayaking. Last month had some real nice waves which I fully enjoyed as much as possible. Some photos are available on the site of the Surfclub.
As it currently seems like real summer here in The Netherlands (a bit late as it’s the end of september now), the sea is as flat as the rest of the country. Time to finally fix my poloboat, play some matches at the local club and go to trainings.

On Wednesday the guys wanted to do something new and check out the Durance Gorge. However you need good water levels which are dependent on a dam just before the Gorge. According to the book this is a nice section with a class 5 portage to get around an unrunnable section with a good head for heights. As I don’t have a head for heights I would enjoy myself at the Slalomsite of L’Argentiere.

Last week I saw a post from some kayak buddies that they were looking for another passenger and boater for their trip to the French Alps. It took a lot of phonecalls and emails to arrange others for all my kayaking duties for my club and getting some time off from work, but luckily it worked out. So I’m now in the Alps instead of the flat water of our club, 4 weeks after my trip to Slovenia (trip report still coming, hopefully soon …). Thanks for the opportunity guys!

Around easter (23 april) it was finally time for the start of our two week paddling vacation in Slovenia. Slovenia is a long drive from the Netherlands, around 14 hours, but on the way is a nice paddling stop called Plattling. It’s a 9 hour drive from the Netherlands and you can setup your tent almost next to the wave. As the rest of the group we wanted to paddle with arrived on Wednesday in Slovenia we decided to spend 3 days in Plattling for some freestyling and checking out the freestyle moves of the pro’s.

At our local kayak club we have a thriving polo group with two youth teams that train on the same day and are competing each time to get the best boats available. We have a lot of old polyester felix boats, some of them are almost 20 years old. As you can imagine, it gets harder and harder to keep these afloat each year. So it’s time for new boats and this time without the hassle of fixing them each year, we want polyethyleen (PE) plastic boats.

The last weekend of march was the last pool session at KanoRijnland. In the past this session was always used to organize a eskimo rolling competition, to see what was learned in the winter season. This year the tradition was reinstated and I decided to join the fun.

In 1992, the United Nations decided that the 22nd of March would be World Water Day. Normally I don’t give a lot of attention to all those specials days, somehow every day is a special day to someone or some organisation, but this time I was interested.
Why? Because March, 22 is my birthday and more importantly because I like Water!

Yesterday the new whitewater film by Rush Sturges, Frontier, was played in the Filmhuis Den Haag, the first (and only?) showing in the Netherlands. Off course we wanted to be there as Dutch freestyle kayakker Casper van Kalmthout is in this one. Last year we also enjoyed Dream Result from Rush Sturges in a bar in The Hague, so we didn’t want to miss this one.
